Popular British rapper, Stormzy, has been banned from driving in the UK for nine months following a court ruling.
The Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence on Thursday after Stormzy was caught using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London. An off-duty police officer spotted the incident in West Kensington on March 7, 2024.
Presiding over the case, District Judge Andrew Sweet criticised the rapper’s “dangerous and irresponsible” behaviour, noting that his driving record was “not good.”
Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., pleaded guilty via a letter submitted to the court. In addition to the driving ban, he was fined £2,010 ($2,498), with six penalty points added to his licence.
Before the court hearing, Stormzy already had six points on his licence for a previous speeding offence. Under UK driving laws, accumulating 12 or more penalty points within three years typically results in disqualification.
