How Brexit Has Thrown Gareth Bale’s Future At Madrid Into Doubt

2 Min Read

Britain’s withdrawal from the EU will re-classify Gareth Bale as a Non-EU player, pushing Real Madrid’s number over the La Liga quota.

According to Spanish newspaper, AS, James Rodriguez, Casemiro and Danilo are the other non-EU players in the squad.

La Liga rules stipulate that clubs have no more than three non-EU players in their squad; meaning one of those three players will have to be sold to avoid breaching league rules.

Gareth Bale was one of Zinedine Zidane’s crucial members of his Champions League squad and, while it is unlikely the world’s most expensive player will be sold over irregular starters Casemiro and Danilo, the Welshman is just one of a handful of players who could be sold.

James Rodriguez could also make way given the mounting speculation around the Colombian’s future at the club.

Gareth Bale has enjoyed a flying start to Wales’ Euro 2016 campaign, equalling a record set by Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane and Thomas Hassler for scoring two free-kicks at a major tournament.

The 26-year-old is currently third on the top goalscorer charts for Euro 2016; one behind fellow Real Madrid team mate Alvaro Morata.

Bale is set to start up front for the fourth game in a row as Wales look to book a first ever quarter-final spot with victory over Northern Ireland.
