Boko Haram takes over Chibok

Chibok, the town where more than 200 girls were kidnapped in April have been seized by Boko Haram.

The militants took over the town on Thursday evening.

A senator from Borno State, Ali Ndume, told the BBC Hausa service that security forces posted in the town ran away when the militants attacked.

Residents told the Sahara Reporters news website that the militants headed to the centre of Chibok and declared that they were taking it over as part of their caliphate.

Musa Ali, a vigilante who tried to defend Chibok also told BBC that “You couldn’t count them because there were so many.

“All the security and the soldiers, they ran away and left us on our own. They didn’t shoot at them, they just ran. All the ammunition we had was finished, so there was no way we could attempt to hold the area.”

In April, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from Government Secondary School, Chibok, the kidnap drew the world’s attention to activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria. Many countries pledged their support to the Nigerian government in efforts to recover the missing girls but till date, rescue operations have been unfruitful.
