The Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum says Boko Haram terrorists have begun to look towards Internally-Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to recruit new members.
He disclosed this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, noting that the Federal Government must expedite action to allow the IDPs return to their homes.
“Truly, the Boko Haram sect is working on people to join them. This is frightening. If the IDPs living in camps could not get what they are looking for, especially the opportunity to go back to their various towns and return to farm, they may be forced to join the Boko Haram sect,” Zulum warned.
He noted that no government could afford to feed the IDPs in perpetuity, reiterating that it was more feasible to provide the right conditions for them to return to their communities.
“It is important that they go back to their various towns because no government can continue to be feeding them continuously,” Zulum stated.
The governor explained that his government has been able to see to the return of some IDPs from Mafa and Kukawa local government areas, while the people of Kawuri LGA would soon be returned to their community.
He expressed confidence in the military’s ability to ensure the safe return of IDPs from Baga, Marte, Malam Fatori and Guzamala LGAs to their various communities.
