Northern Governors of states affected by the Boko Haram crisis have embarked on a trip to Washington D.C to meet with American officials and brainstorm on strategies to bring the insurgency to an end.
They are expected to meet with White House officials, President Barack Obama, Congresssional leaders, the National Intelligence Council and the European Union (EU) developmental agencies, among others.
The workshop is expected to provide important opportunity for Nigerian governors to inform and discuss with the US government officials on current economic, social and security challenges in the region.
Speaking on the symposium, Governor Aliyu Wammako said, “I was invited to the symposium just like my other colleagues, and I felt that going there to say how it is in Nigeria is what would help us to galvanise international support for combating the menace of terrorism in our place of origin.
“The programme, no doubt, affords an opportunity for those of us from Nigeria to rub minds with experts on security matters with a view to finding practicable solutions to the growing influence insurgency in our region.”
Governors Kashim Shettima (Borno) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi) are said to already be in Washington D.C where they have met with Bill Gates at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in order to seek more support for Polio eradication.
