Four suspected female Boko Haram suicide bombers and a vigilante were killed on Wednesday when one of the suicide bombers blew herself up in Mafa, Borno State.
According to reports, the suspected suicide bombers were approaching a military checkpoint in Mafa, which is 50 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, when they were stopped by members of the civilian JTF who were manning the checkpoint.
It was learnt that one of the girls, who were aged between nine and 12 years, detonated her explosive.
A spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Abdulkadir, told AFP: “Suicide bombers tried to enter and they were being intercepted for interrogation.
“One detonated their bomb,” he said, adding “all of them were bombers, all women.”
Last month eight people were killed at the same checkpoint when a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives among women and children arriving in Maiduguri seeking to escape Boko Haram violence in the countryside, AFP reported.
