The convoy of Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State was attacked by Boko Haram fighters along the Maiduguri – Damaturu highway on Thursday evening.
According to a report by Punch Newspaper, five members of the ex governor’s convoy were killed in the attack which occured around Auno, just a few kilometres from Maiduguri.
The convoy was rescued by men of the Rapid Response Squad who chased away the attackers.

Ali Modu Sheriff was reportedly traveling to Maiduguri from Abuja in a convoy of Nine exotic cars to attend the third day post-burial prayers for his late father, Galadima Sheriff.
Boko Haram fighters trailed the convoy for a while before attacking at Auno around 6:30 pm. Two police officers, two civilians and one soldier lost their lives in the encounter.
One of the vehicles was completely destroyed before an intervention by the Rapid Response Squad deployed to Njimtilo to enforce a coronavirus lockdown chased the Boko Haram fighters away.
