American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish is calling for an end to discussions about her sexuality after she felt “outed” by a magazine. The controversy arose from a recent cover interview with US outlet Variety, where Billie hinted at her attraction to women. During the magazine’s Hitmakers Awards over the weekend, she was asked on camera if she had intended to come out.
Expressing her frustration, Billie sarcastically thanked Variety for “outing” her instead of discussing other significant matters. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Thanks Variety for my award and also for outing me on a red carpet at 11 a.m. instead of talking to me about anything else that matters. I like boys and girls; leave me alone about it, please. Literally who cares.”
The magazine interview, published on November 13, delves into Billie’s experiences as a young woman in the public eye and her feelings towards other females. She expressed her attraction to both boys and girls, emphasizing that she loves them as people.
During the red carpet event, Billie seemed surprised that people were not aware of her sexuality, stating, “I didn’t realise people didn’t know.” However, she also expressed reservations about the concept of “coming out” and questioned why individuals should be required to disclose their sexuality. “Why can’t we just exist?” she pondered. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it.”
