Beyonce absolutely killed it on stage with energetic performances that really got the crowd jumping, but that was not all she did. She also showed solidarity to the #BlackLivesMatter movement by appearing on the red carpet with prominent figures in the movement.
She arrived at the red carpet with daughter Blue Ivy, cast members from Lemonade, and the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, and Mike Brown who were all shot and killed by white people which sparked the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
After that though, she was on the stage slaying, She opened up with “Pray You Catch Me,” a somber, eerie opening that included women next to her dropping dead and a boy in a hoodie — an echo of Trayvon Martin — wrapping his arms around her. The message was clear and the visual haunting.
She then continued with “Hold Up” and “Sorry” — brutally honest songs that talk about her husband’s alleged affair, showcasing a snarling, more ferocious side to Beyonce.
She closed the show with ‘Formation’ which is another iconic song that just shows she is the epitome of the Pop genre in music today.
She also took home at least 5 awards including Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Breakthrough Long Form Video, and Video of the Year (for “Formation”).
This took her to 21 wins, breaking Madonna’s record of 20. She’s a living legend.
