The Senate on Wednesday summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris for failing to carry out its resolution demanding the arrest of the perpetrators of the Benue killings.
Recall that 73 persons were killed in Guma and Logo LGAs of Benue by suspected herdsmen on New Year’s Day.
The Senate had immediately dispatched a Senator Ahmed Lawan-led fact-finding committee to the state.
The committee had two weeks ago presented its report before the senate and the Upper Chamber released a resolution mandating the police boss to fish out and produce the killers within 14 days.
But in a point of order on Wednesday, Senator Joshua Ladani (Gombe South) noted that the two weeks ultimatum given to the police boss to act on the resolution had failed.
He added that not only did the police boss not act on the resolution but he also failed to show cause why he did not do so.
Thereafter, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki directed the joint Senate Committee on Police Affairs and National Intelligence to invite Idris for a briefing on the matter and report to the house next Tuesday.
The senate president stressed that senate resolutions must be respected, especially when human lives are involved.
Saraki vowed to ensure that the Benue killings is addressed appropriately.
