Eleven street beggars take their begging to court when fined a N1, 000 each for street begging by an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The beggars were convicted of a one-count charge of street begging which the prosecutor said contravened Section 4 of the Kwara State Law, 2006.
They were arrested while roaming around and begging for alms on an Ilorin street, according to the charge sheet. The accused persons did not hesitate to plead guilty to the charge against them.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Funsho Zacheus, applied for summary trial for the beggars since they pleaded guilty.
Magistrate Nathaniel Ajide, granted summary trial and in his final judgment, convicted the street beggars now turned ‘court beggars,’ as charged and ordered them to pay N1,000 fine.
