Bayern’s Martinez visits Migrants

Martinez visits Migrants

In a show of humanitarian goodwill to migrants, Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez has been visiting them at Munich train station to offer his support.

Many of these migrants are fleeing conflicts and deplorable living conditions in Syria, Afghanistan and Africa.

Martinez said “Every little helps! Welcome refugees!” in a Twitter post that includes a photo of him handing a Bayern football to a young child.

Munich police authorities said “there’s no end to the support from Munich people for refugees at Munich main train station” and they thanked Martinez for helping.

Bayern Munich announced Thursday it would set up a training camp for youths and give them meals, German lessons and soccer equipment, as well as donate 1 million euros ($1.1 million) to separate refugee projects.

About 2,400 migrants arrived at Munich main train station on Tuesday. Germany expects about 800,000 to arrive in the country this year, a 400 per cent increase from last year.

German authorities said they would register every migrant and, when applicable, initiate an application for asylum, though there are mixed reactions among Germans on whether to welcome migrants or turn them away.
