The Peoples Democratic Party has expressed its support for the cancellation of re-scheduled gubernatorial election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, where the process was reportedly marred by violence.
This was disclosed in a Tuesday statement by Jonathan Obuebite, the Director of Publicity of the Restoration Campaign Organisation of Governor Seriake Dickson.
The party said it was wrong of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct election in the LGA in the first place, judging by the security concerns already expressed in various quarters.
Obuebite reiterated the stance of the party that the military were conniving with the opposition All Progressives Congress to intimidate PDP members and engage in other forms of electoral malpractices, while saying it informed INEC prior to the election that thugs assisted by the military had taken over the whole of the area.
While declaring that his party was committed to free and fair elections in the state, he said that the military were receiving instructions from Abuja to ensure that Timipre Sylva is declared the winner.
He wondered how a transparent election would be conducted in an area where election materials were still being distributed as late as 4pm on Sunday.
Also, the PDP accused APC of colluding with police and military authorities to cause voter apathy with their promotion of violence, ballot box snatching and intimidation of opponents.
Obuebite said that the infractions that occurred in Southern Ijaw LGA on Sunday was orchestrated by a top Federal Government official whose mandate was to bring Sylva into power by crooked means.
