Basic Education Expert Urges Continuous Training For Teachers

2 Min Read

A basic education expert, Mrs Olufunso Owasanoye, has called for continuous training and retraining of teachers to enable them adapt to rapid changes in the global learning environment.

Owasanoye made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday during a two-day capacity building workshop for education heads of local governments and local council developments areas.

According to Owasanoye, good teachers are the backbones of good education since learning is an ongoing process.

“After nine years of basic education, the students should be critical in thinking and logical in reasoning, such that they can compete globally,’’ Owasanoye said.

Owasanoye, also Executive Director, Human Developments Initiatives (HDI), an NGO, said that with the schools shutdown due to COVID-19, it had become imperative to bring on board new techniques of online teaching to reach out to their pupils.

She said that a competent and well-resourced teacher was a necessary ingredient in any educational institution and continuous training of teachers remained critical element to achieve this.

NAN reports that no fewer than 57 teachers from 20 Local Governments and 37 Council Areas in Lagos State participated in the two-day workshop. (NAN)
