An Upper Austria town called “Fucking” has officially changed its name, which it has used for more than 900 years.
The town lies north of Salzburg near the German border and is believed to have been founded by a Bavarian nobleman called Focko in the sixth century.
The town was however not inhabited until around 1070, and around 100 people currently occupy it.
The town’s name has now been changed to “Fugging”, its Mayor, Mayor Andrea Holzner, said.
Holzner said that the name change took effect from January 1, 2021.
“Fucking”, which the town has adopted since the 11th Century, has no meaning in German, and a 19th Century map showed it was also known as “Fuking”.
However, the names of the nearby hamlets of Oberfucking and Unterfucking remain unchanged.
