Austria will enter a new COVID-19 lockdown from Nov. 17 until early December, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announces.

The government will close down schools, shops and service businesses and will imposes a curfew.
“A second lockdown is the only known tool that works,” Kurz says, stressing that the step is necessary to bring infection numbers down and to avoid an overburdened hospital system.

“It’s the only way we can salvage Christmas,” he says, offering hope that measures will be relaxed until the major holiday in late December.
