The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has described as a “fabrication” reports that it seized a container stuffed with US dollars at the Apapa Port in Lagos.
The National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Joseph Attah, debunked the rumours being circulated on social media that one of the 40 containers recently seized at the port contained dollars.
Rumours had circulated that the alleged dollar-stuffed container belonged to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
But Attah said such “dangerous” conjectures could overheat the nation’s political space, warning rumour mongers against spreading falsehood.
Attah, who spoke during a media during in Lagos, said that rumour mongers who had no information about the real contents of the containers were behind the spreading of the fake news.
He disclosed that the container was fully loaded with tramadol and other pain killer drugs and not dollars.
“I want to state clearly that the 40 containers seized in Apapa were containing dreaded tramadol and other pain killer drugs, not dollars,” Attah said.
According to him, “We have never seized any container containing American dollars. This kind of fabrication is false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic on the polity.”
