Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah has said that Monday’s exchange of banter between two leading presidential candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, further proved why Nigerians should not kill each other over support for politicians.
Kukah, the Convener of the National Peace Committee (NPC), said this on Tuesday when he appeared on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” programme.
Recall that a video circulated on Monday of Atiku and Tinubu laughing while gisting at at the private wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Reacting, Kukah said the video showed that politicians do not take politics too seriously, unlike some of their followers.
“These politicians are struggling and they’ve lived their lives struggling for the national cake which they will distribute amongst themselves. It is therefore in the interest of ordinary Nigerians to know that they have to vote to stay alive,” he said.
The cleric said that the followers must be wise and show some restraints when attacking each other over politicians.
He added that the followers must also realise that these politicians know themselves, irrespective of their antics and posturing.
“We ordinary people must figure out how to manage our passion when it comes to politics. Don’t take seriously the grandstanding of the politicians.
“All the things you see about them abusing themselves or quarreling, you will think they will never shake hands. They are very good friends, and many of them drink from the same pool. So, don’t go and kill yourself for nothing. That is what that message is all about,” Kukah said.
