Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has heaped praise on immediate-past President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as a “hero” of democracy” in Nigeria.
Atiku, 71, made this known when he paid a courtesy visit on the ex-President at his home in Otuoke, Bayelsa on Wednesday, June 20.
He praised Jonathan for his historic decision to willingly hand over power after losing the 2015 presidential election.
Atiku noted that the singular decision stood Jonathan out as an exemplary democrat as it helped diffuse tension in a country that had been expected to go up in flames.
He said, “I want to say without equivocation that history will be very kind to you. As the democrat that I have always been, I want to say you have truly excelled. If you did not excel as a democrat par excellence, I wonder what the situation in Nigeria would be today.”
Atiku, who has signified interest in vying for the presidency in 2019, also introduced the Director of his Campaign Organisation, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
In his response, Jonathan wished Atiku well in his ambition and commended him for appointing Daniel as his campaign DG.
