2 Min Read

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday, January 9, declined comment on the outcome of its meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Herald gathered that the ASUU leadership was led by its president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.

It was learnt that the meeting was at the instance of the university lecturers who have been resisting to enrol on the federal government`s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The meeting which was presided over by President Buhari was attended by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed and Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

Others included the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige and Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

Meanwhile, The Herald reported that some members of the ASUU had started enrolling for the Integrated Personnel Payroll Integrated System (IPPIS) contrary to the directive of the union.

The reports on Wednesday, December 4, revealed that institutions where lecturers had registered for the IPPIS included the University of Calabar and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The ASUU opposed the IPPIS despite the federal government’s directive that any worker that failed to register for it would not be paid his December salary.

The union directed its members not to enrol for the IPPIS, which the government said was aimed at fighting corruption through payment of  salaries to each  employee’s bank account.
