Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University chapter have embarked on an indefinite strike protesting high school fees and other adverse policies.
Chairman of the union, Adekunle Idris, told journalists that the strike would be indefinite, total and comprehensive until their three core demands are met.
The three demands, according to him, include reversal of the high school fees regime; repeal of the ‘no vacancy, no promotion’ policy, and the implementation of the universities (Miscellaneous Provision) (Amendment) Act, 2012 in LASU.
“It is a sad decision we are compelled to take and have taken it with every sense of responsibility. We are well prepared for the usual phases of engagement with authorities in Nigeria”, he said.
He cited developments in the administration of the varsity that were unacceptable to its teaching staff.
“By our collective assessment, these developments are initial too long term prosperity of the university, for the students for whom the institution was established and the career advancement of ASUU members.”
