The Association of Christian Schools in Nigeria (ACSN) has commended the Federal Government for restoring Christian Religions Studies (CRS) as a subject on its own in schools curriculum.
The association, which gave the commendation in a communiqué signed by its Chairman, Dr Ekaette Ettang and other stakeholders after a general meeting in Jos, also urged distribution of the curriculum to schools.
In the communiqué which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jos, Ettang expressed gratitude to government for separating the CRS curriculum from national value curriculum.
“ACSN is very grateful to Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) which supervised the separation.
“We also thank NERDC for the upgrade of the curriculum to meet present day demands and goals for which CRS is created.’’
The association, however, expressed concerns that the curriculum, which was printed since July 2018, had not been distributed to the various schools offering CRS as a subject.
ACSN appealed to the government to fast track the distribution of the curriculum to the schools considering that 2018/2019 academic session had already gone far.
“ACSN is requesting both federal and state governments to ensure that all teachers teaching CRS are teachers who are qualified by character, conviction and training.
“ACSN is further requesting to be allowed to monitor the implementation of the curriculum across schools in Nigeria through our mobile inspectors.
“ACSN is willing to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and SUBEB to ensure the quality of teachers by training and retraining CRS teachers across the country,” he added. (NAN)
