Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer, Ololade Ahmed, popularly known as Asake, has shared his preference for singing in Yoruba over English.
During a recent interactive session with fans on Instagram, the ‘Ome Ope’ crooner explained that while he can sing in English, he feels more comfortable expressing himself in his native dialect, Yoruba. He emphasized that those who do not appreciate his choice should refrain from listening to his music.
“I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba. It’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you vibe with me, vibe with me in Yoruba. If not, then don’t,” Asake stated.
Asake’s discography, including his albums ‘Mr Money With The Vibes’ (2022), ‘Work of Art’ (2023), and the latest ‘Lungu Boy’, predominantly features songs in Yoruba. His hit song ‘Amapiano’ was nominated for the Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys, despite being sung mainly in Yoruba. However, it lost to South African singer Tyla’s viral hit ‘Water’.
