Arms money went missing under Buratai, other ex-service chiefs – NSA Monguno

NSA Monguno

The National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.) says some funds meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition to combat insecurity went missing under the tenure of the immediate-past service chiefs.

He stated this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Friday.

The immediate-past service chiefs are: Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok- Ette Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar(retd.) (Bauchi).

They tendered their immediate resignation and President Muhammadu Buhari immediately appointed their replacements on January 26.

However, the president subsequently appointed them as non-career ambassadors and the Senate confirmed the appointment on February 23.

Speaking with the BBC, Monguno said that it has been difficult tracing the funds and the new service chiefs have not seen the arms meant to be procured.

According to him, the president will soon launch an investigation to unravel the mystery of the missing funds.

“No one knows what happened to the money but by God’s grace, the president will investigate to find out whether the money was spent and where the arms went,” Monguno said.
