2 Min Read

According to reports, Senate Minority leader, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio led two police patrol vehicles to attack and disrupt proceedings at the Sanitation Court in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkaner, confirmed the incident and made it known that the Commissioner of Police, Zubiru Umar was also aware of the incident.

The Akwa-Ibom Police Force have commenced investigations on the alleged attack which took place last weekend.

The proceedings at the sanitation court was to try cases of 23 sanitation defaulters.

One of these defaulters was identified as Akpabio’s daughter.

She was apprehended by sanitation officers attached to the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources during last Saturday’s monthly sanitation exercise.

Reports state that she repeatedly insulted and threatened court officials.

She was later noticed to place a phone call to her father after which he arrived with six armed policemen.

It was reported that Akpabio called for reinforcements after the court officials refused to release his daughter.

Two patrol vehicles filled with about 20 armed policemen stormed the premises and fired several shots in the air.

The armed policemen extracted the Senator’s child and fled the premises.

P.R.O Elkaner said that Umar was unhappy with the behaviour of the O/C, Anti-Robbery.

He said: “The state police command is aware of the unfortunate incident. The commissioner has ordered an investigation into the incident and disciplinary action would be taken against the O/C if found guilty.”
