The All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. According to Felix Morka, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, undermined democracy in the state.
Morka alleged that Fubara’s actions, including attempting to remove the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and freezing the flow of funds to the Assembly, were a slap in the face of democracy. He also criticized opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, for remaining silent while Fubara’s actions escalated.
Defending the state of emergency, Morka emphasized that President Tinubu acted within the framework of Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the President to declare a state of emergency in cases of severe threats to national security or governance.
The declaration was ratified by a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, demonstrating broad political consensus on the issue. However, critics argue that the suspension of Governor Fubara did not follow the clear process outlined in Section 188 of the Constitution.
