The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has berated the Nigerian government over the cancellation of Post-UTME.
The president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi questioned the credibility of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), stating that the Board has, overtime, failed to demonstrate credibility in challenging times.
He added that a review of both examinations proved that students who scored high in JAMB performed below expectation in the Post-UTME.
Ogunyemi said: “The Academic Staff Union of Universities has noted with deep regret the recent pronouncement by the federal government of Nigeria forbidding Nigerian universities from conducting Post- UTME test.”
“The question is: is the unified tertiary matriculation examination credible enough to warrant the cancellation of Post-UTME?” Ogunyemi asked.
He added: “In a fundamental way, the policy undermines the autonomy of universities and powers of university senate as the highest policy making body on academic matters, particularly admission of students and award of university degrees,”
He further stated that the Post-UTME is “a decision that Nigerian universities had to take when the credibility and integrity of JAMB examinations and results became questionable.”
“It is really difficult to know what JAMB is afraid of. The universities have not disregarded JAMB scores. Indeed, JAMB scores are the basis of invitation of candidates for Post-UTME tests.
“As is the case in most universities, candidates invited for the Post-UTME tests were those that got at least 180 in JAMB. The Post-UTME tests were just another of screening. This is a quality assurance tests which the federal government and all Nigerians who care about educational standards should applaud and not condemn,”
