Argentina and Manchester City forward, Sergio Aguero has angrily reacted to a statement in which he was quoted as saying that neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to win this year’s Ballon D’Or award.
He issued the clarification on Twitter on Tuesday, after some quotes were attributed to him last week.
Aguero was quoted to have said that the Ballon D’Or award should be given to a player that plays in the Champions League final.
“I think someone should win it in the Champions League final,” he was quoted to have said.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are in the UEFA Champions League final that is due to be played in Madrid on June 1.
While Ronaldo plays for Real Madrid, Messi is a Barcelona player, and both shared the award five times each between 2008 and 2017, before Luka Modric won the last award.
But in a tweet, Aguero denied making the statement, saying compatriot and five-time winner of the award, Messi should win the top individual prize.
He wrote, “I don’t enjoy having to clarify my statements – but when I’m quoted for things I haven’t said, it must be done.
“I’ll spell it out then. No one other than Messi will be my pick for the Balon d’Or as long as he keeps on playing – particularly if he plays like he did this season.”
