Belgium powerhouse, Anderlecht has responded to petulant Nigerian star Henry Onyekuru’s assertion that they stood in the way of his world cup dream.
Onyekuru who sustained an injury in December, claimed that he was fit and ready to play but was not selected by the coach meaning he was unable to prove his fitness and subsequently wasn’t picked in Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup.
A spokesman for the club said that injury was the reason for Onyekuru’s exclusion from Nigeria’s world cup squad and not any perceived vendetta from the club.
“Henry is a great player and his injury in December weakened the squad and reduced his chances to participate in the World Cup with his country,” the spokesman said.
“RSC Anderlecht, nor the technical staff never made any promise to Henry concerning his selection.
“RSCA is a professional club and it wouldn’t be very professional to make promises to players.
“The coach selects the best and fittest players for the games.”
Onyekuru had alleged that he was fit all along but wasn’t used by the coach. The Everton forward is on loan at Anderlecht and they have the option of keeping him for another year, an option that Onyekuru has kicked against.
Onyekuru kicked off the season well scoring 10 goals across all competitions at the start of the season before injury struck
