Amnesty International Affirms Threat to Staff Lives, Vows to Never Keep Silent

The global human rights group, Amnesty International has brought to light that the lives of its member of staff in Nigeria are being threatened.

The group added that irrespective of the building threats, they refuse to back down in their fight against injustice in the nation.

Recall that Amnesty International played an active role in the #EndSARS protest against police brutality in Nigeria. They also released footage of the Lekki toll massacre which captured the Nigerian army shooting sporadically at unarmed protesters, leading to the death of many.

The group took to its official Twitter page for Nigeria on Friday to release a statement, drawing the attention of the public and Nigerian authorities to the recurring bullying and incessant threat of incoming attacks that were issued against its staff and premises by an unknown and faceless group at a press conference held on 4 November 2020.

Tweeting, the group said, “Amnesty International is a human rights organization and not affiliated to any government, ideology, interests, political, religious or commercial. We have been working in Nigeria since June 1967.

“Despite threats to our lives, through faceless organizations and sponsored protests, we will not stay silent. In the face of efforts to evade responsibility or to smear our organization, we will continue to raise our voices whenever and wherever we see injustice

“We will continue to call on the Nigerian government to use its authority and resources to investigate all allegations of human rights violations and abuses, including; rape, torture, arbitrary detentions and unlawful killings”.
