Mr. Nwachukwu Amazu, a banker who helped Senate President Bukola Saraki transfer huge sums of foreign exchange from his Nigerian bank account to to his foreign account in the American Express Service Europe Ltd. has testified that Amex Ltd, the operators of Saraki’s foreign credit card are not a bank.
Th witness made the testimony during the ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja today. Nwachukwu testified that the transfers occurred whilst Saraki was the Governor of Kwara state.
A section of Nigerians are of the opinion that Saraki should be made to step down from the Senate Presidency following his involvement in the transactions which breaches section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, CAP. C15, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and as incorporated under paragraph 11(1) and (2), Part I o the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution.
The offence punishable under section 23(2) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act as incorporated under paragraph 18, Part I of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution.
Other die hard supporters of the Senate President are insistent that this is a witch hunt designed to cast aspersions on any future ambitions of Saraki for higher office in Nigeria.
