Tired of the antics of Republican presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, some prominent American celebrities have joined forces to ensure the billionaire does not attain the exalted office.
The celebrities, among who are writers, actions and intellectuals, joined the “Stop Hate Dump Trump” campaign to call attention to the danger America faces if the controversial Republican hopeful is not stopped in his tracks.
Among the celebrities are: actors Harry Belafonte, Kerry Washington and Jane Fonda; filmmaker Jonathan Demme and intellectual Noam Chomsky, and a host of others.
One of the founders of the campaign, a playwright Eve Ensler, said: “We are offering Americans a chance to be heard and engage in action, as Trump’s campaign gains momentum even as he increases his hateful and divisive rhetoric.”
Adding that, “We also intend to put the media and political institutions on notice that they are accountable for normalizing Trump’s extremism by treating it as entertainment, by giving it inordinate and unequal air time and by refusing to investigate, interrogate or condemn it appropriately.”
Ensler said countless number of people across all walks of life have signed up to the campaign, among whom are rights activists, teachers, farmers, students and business owners.
She stated that within hours of floating the campaign, more than 1200 personalities had appended their signature, expressing solidarity.
Trump has been criticised across the world for calling for a complete ban on Muslims entering the US in the aftermath of a San Bernardino shooting in which a Muslim couple murdered at least 14 persons.
He has also passed racially discriminatory comments against Blacks and Hispanics, especially Mexicans, including threatening to come down hard on illegal immigrants in the country.
