Alex Iwobi pens new long-term deal at Arsenal

2 Min Read

Super Eagles invitee Alex Iwobi has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Arsenal, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old was offered the contract, after impressing during the club’s pre-season and with the under-21s.

He was a pillar of the under-21 side last season, netting 9 goals in the same number of appearances. He also started on a sound footing already this season, with 2 goals in five appearances.

The youngster expressed his delight at the opportunity given him at Arsenal to improve on his game by extending his contract, stating that he felt he had put in his best to deserve the honour.

Speaking with the club’s website, he said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, especially with a club like Arsenal who are so big.

“I’m happy to sign for them.

“I like to think I have earned it. I have gone through a lot with Arsenal so to have a new and improved contract is very good and I’m happy to have earned it.

“I have had ups and downs. As I was growing up I had a lot of downs but as I get older things just keep getting better and better.

“The ultimate goal is to break into the first team and play as many games as I can.”

The nephew of Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, Iwobi will be hoping to represent his fatherland Nigeria when the Super Eagles trade tackles in a friendly match with DR Congo on Thursday in Belgium.
