Remember Severus Snape in Harry Porter? With his perpetually cool and calm grace, Snape has come to be referred to as one of the unforgotten characters in the classic.
Alan Rickman, the actor who brought Snape to life has died aged 69 in London. His death was confirmed by his family who said that he died “surrounded by family and friends”. Rickman had been suffering from cancer.
JK Rowling, author of the Harry Porter books said: “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.
“Everybody loved Alan. He was always happy and fun and creative and very, very funny.”
His final job was taping a voiceover for a short film called This Tortoise Could Save a Life, in aid of Save the Children and Refugee Council.
He never won an an Oscar but he received a Golden Globe, an Emmy, a Bafta and many more.
When asked during an interview in 2008, he said “Parts win prizes, not actors.”
