International media started paying attention to Boko Haram in April 2014 when the group abducted over 250 school girls in Chibok in northern Nigeria.
In Boko Haram, an upcoming Al Jazeera documentary, director Xavier Muntz takes a longer view, going back to the group’s 2002 origins to try to uncover the reasons behind its growth and extreme violence, not only in northern Nigeria, but also in Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The documentary also explores why Nigeria – now in coalition with its neighbours – is still struggling to contain the group.
Boko Haram premieres on Al Jazeera this Thursday, 10 November 2016 at 20 00 GMT / 21 00WAT. The full documentary will be available to stream on http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/specialseries/ after it airs.
