Agriculturist advises maize farmers to finish planting before end of May

1 Min Read

Farmers have been urged to finish maize planting for the current planting season before the end of May.

An Agriculturist, Mr Michael Ogunsusi of Beulak Farms in Ayedun, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti, gave the advice on Wednesday in an interview with the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Odo-Ayedun.

Ogunsusi said the change in the climate condition would make weather not favourable for maize cultivation in June.

He explained that “the seizure of rain in late April and early May are signs that there will be downpour in June and July.

“Planting of maize during torrential downpour is not advisable because maize or other grains, except rice, planted during the period may not grow well.

“So, farmers are advised to make sure that planting of such grains for this season is completed latest by end of May.”

The agriculturist further advised farmers to embrace the cultivation of melon (Egusi), saying its demand had increased in recent times.

He said farmers practicing mixed farming could plant melon alongside maize, stressing that melon cultivation would reduce the growth of weed
on farms. (NAN)
