A 90th-minute goal courtesy substitute, Paul Onuachu ensured the Super Eagles snatched victory away to Benin Republic on Saturday.
The hard-won victory was also enough to ensure Gernot Rohr’s team qualified for the 2022 African Cup of Nations as Group L winners.
It was the first time that the Beninise would be beaten at home for eight years, with their last defeat at home being against Algeria in 2013.
Before the game played at the Charles de Gaulle stadium in Porto-Novo, the Super Eagles had not recorded a victory in over a year, after they defeated Lesotho 4-2 in matchday two of the AFCON qualifiers in November 2019.
The Herald had reported that the Super Eagles booked their place in the 2022 AFCON before the game’s kick-off, after Lesotho held Sierra Leone to a goalless draw earlier in the day.
