Lagos Issues Safety Measures Ahead Of AFCON Final

Ahead of the final match of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday, February 11, the Lagos State Ministry of Health has issued a health advisory and safety measures to all residents.

The Herald recalls that there were reports of some Nigerians losing their lives following Wednesday’s penalty shoot-outs between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

In a statement released by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, he listed tips on how Nigerians can watch the match and still prioritize their health and general well-being.

The Commissioner, in the statement, advised Nigerians to stay hydrated and nourished while they watch the match, as it would help boost their immune systems.

He also warned against watching the match in crowded places that are poorly ventilated or hot, as it tends to expose them to different health attacks.

Ayobami, who also tasked Nigerians with taking breaks to stretch their bodies, also warned against excessive intake of alcohol, noting that it tends to trigger underlying health conditions.

He further urged them to sit in a comfortable chair with proper back support and to also stay calm and relaxed while being mindful of how they allow anxiety from the match to stress them.

He also added, “Know Your Limits: Understand your physical limitations and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions before engaging in activities that could potentially exacerbate them.”

The Commissioner reeled out emergency numbers to call in the case of emergency for Lagos state residents, to be, “Contact the Lagos Emergency Medical Team, LASAMBUS, at 767 or 112 toll-free line in case of a medical emergency.”
