Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has called on the Tinubu-led Federal Government to ensure justice is served for killers of Nigerian Army personnel who were ambushed and killed while on a peace mission to the Okuama community in Delta State.

The Herald recalls that the attack, which occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024, resulted in the loss of a commanding officer, two majors, one captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian. Shockingly, the bodies of the deceased were reportedly concealed by the assailants.

Expressing deep condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, Adeyanju lamented the loss of these brave individuals who were committed to serving their country and promoting peace in the Okuama community. He emphasized the valor and sacrifice demonstrated by the fallen soldiers and called for their memories to be honored.

The statement reads in part, “The news of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of the Commanding Officer, two majors, one captain, and twelve soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion has left me in shock, disbelief and mourning.

“These brave men and women who protect us daily were on a noble peace mission, selflessly dedicating themselves to the service of our country and striving to bring stability and harmony to our country and the Okuoma community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.

“May the souls of our fallen heroes find eternal peace and rest. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will forever be etched in our hearts and minds. We will forever be grateful for their service and sacrifice.”

The activist called on the authorities to leave no stone untouched in ensuring those responsible for killing are brought to justice.

In the wake of the ambush, tensions in the region have escalated, with reports of local youths allegedly holding an Okoloba native, Mr. Anthony Aboh, hostage in retaliation.

As the community mourns the loss of these soldiers, Adeyanju’s advocacy for justice underscores the pressing need for accountability and resolution in the face of such senseless violence.
