Aston Villa have signed former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina from AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season.
The 37-year-old plied his trade at Liverpool from 2005 – 2013 before moving to Bayern Munich after a loan spell with Napoli and later made the switch to AC Milan.
Villa were short of goalkeeping options following an injury to England international Tom Heaton which ruled him out for the rest of the season.
Reina was in the stands as Manchester City humiliated Villa 6-1 at the Villa park on Sunday.
Jed Steer Villa’s reserve goalkeeper is also injured.
“We’ve managed to secure a player in Pepe who has a wealth of Premier League experience,” said Villa boss Dean Smith.
“At the start of the summer we were looking for an experienced goalkeeper and brought in Tom Heaton. Unfortunately, his injury has ruled him out for the rest of the season but Pepe fits our criteria not just because of his experience but also because of his leadership qualities.”
