It will be a repeat of Senegal ’92 final when the Black Stars of Ghana and Cote d’ Ivoire step out for the African top crown on Sunday.
Ghana cruised into the final of the Africa Cup of Nations courtesy of a 3-0 victory over hosts Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Thursday, although the match was overshadowed by crowd trouble in the closing stages.
Jordan Ayew put the Black Stars ahead from the penalty spot, after Felipe Ovono fouled Kwesi Appiah in the box. Avram Grant’s men doubled the lead just four minutes later, after Wakaso Mubarak finished off a fine counter attack. Andre Ayew killed off the game midway into the second half with the third goal.
The match was delayed for more than half an hour, after the home supporters threw bottles and missiles at Ghana’s players, staff and fans, as they sense their imminent defeat.
Ghana will face Ivory Coast, who have a chance of lifting the trophy for the first time since 1992. The Ivorians defeated DR Congo 3-1 to qualify for the final.
