Ricardo Carvalho hails his countryman Cristiano Ronaldo as the almost perfect player

3 Min Read

Cristiano Ronaldo is the almost perfect player, according to team-mate Ricardo Carvalho.

Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford on Tuesday for Portugal’s friendly against beaten world Cup finalists Argentina.

Carvalho believes Ronaldo has the advantage over Messi in the race for the Ballon d’Or and claimed the Real Madrid star is close to being a complete player.

“Everyone is expecting that Cristiano can win the third Golden Ball [Ballon d’Or],” said Carvalho. “I think he’s the best.

“We are so proud of him. He’s doing a great job during these past six or seven years. He’s improving in all the small details, making so many goals.

“He wants always more, even in training. Maybe next he can break his own records. He’s looking always to try his best.

“It’s difficult because, when you see him, he’s almost perfect – strong, good in the air, fit always. It’s difficult to say what he is missing.”

The three-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or is revealed on December 1, with the winner announced at a ceremony in Zurich on January 12.

Former Chelsea and Real defender Carvalho, now with Monaco, said he felt Ronaldo, 29, was the clear favourite to make it a hat-trick of Ballon d’Or wins.

“There’s no reason why not,” said Carvalho. “He’s strong, good in the air, good with his feet and he wants to win more and more. There’s no reason for him not to win it for the third time.”

On Portugal’s test against Argentina, who will be inspired by Messi, Carvalho said: “We all know how good Argentina are. They were finalists in the World Cup.

“They have players who can decide the match in the spur of the moment. We just have to keep our eyes open and do our best.

“We don’t know exactly who is going to play but the most important thing is for us to defend as a team and as a block and whoever is the nearest  player, you need to mark them.”
