Argentine international Lionel Messi equalled Raul’s all-time Champions League record of 71 goals after scoring a brace in Barcelona’s 2 – 0 win over Ajax.
Messi had 69 goals before the match and ended up scoring the 70th and 71st to reach Raul’s record.
Ajax poor defence, failing to clear a free-kick, put Barcelona in the lead as Messi delivered a cross with an header to the back of the net.
He found the net again in the 76th minute, assisted by substitute Pedro, to defeat Holland goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen’s howler.
Barcelona are now through to the last 16 alongside Paris St Germain, who beat APOEL in France.
Christiano Ronaldo would have been the one to reach the record first, having just one goal left before playing against Liverpool.
But, he wasn’t fortunate to score the much desired goal.
Barca manager Luis Enrique praised Messi’s success.
“Messi is without doubt the best player I’ve seen as a player and a coach,” he said
