Entertainment company, MTV Base recently released a list of 20 Nigerian songs titled “ The Best Naija Tracks Ever on MTV Base” and the tracks were aired on Nigeria’s independence day.
A lot of music enthusiast showed disapproval of MTV’s compilation and what followed was a heated argument on various social networks.
MTV Base via it’s official website tried to justified their decision.
“The list of artists and song was determined by viewers of MTV Base, who voted their musical favourites from the channel’s launch on 22 February 2005 until the present day,” they claimed.
Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, revealed that “The list was never intended to reflect the Best Naija Tracks of all time.”
“It(the list) was supposed to highlight artists that have been played on our channel since the launch of MTV Base in 2005, hence the title ‘The Best Naija Tracks Ever on MTV Base’, ” he added.
