2 Min Read

National Universities Commission, (NUC) via it’s weekly bulleting, released last week, has announced the closure of 55 “Degree Mills” (unaccredited higher education institution) in Nigeria.

According to the publication, the 55 illegal universities were closed for
‘violating the Education (National Minimum Standards etc.) Act CAP E3 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.’

The announcement, signed by NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius A. Okojie also identified 8 other institutions which will be probed, investigated and possibly arraigned in a bid to “recover illegal fees and charges on subscribers.”

The listed 8 universities are :

National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State.

North Central University, Otukpo, Benue State .

Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu.

Richmond Open University, Arochukwu, Abia State.

West Coast University, Umuahia.

Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Volta University College, Aba, Abia State.

Illegal Satellite Campuses of Ambrose Alli University.

For clarification purpose, NUC noted that, “anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk. Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognised for the purposes of NYSC, employment, and further studies.”

They threatened to uncover more Degree Mills, stating that the released list isn’t ‘exhaustive’.
