Abia Representative Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized for physically and verbally assaulting a Bolt driver who delivered a package to his residence in Maitama, Abuja.
In a statement, Ikwechegh acknowledged his behavior fell short of expectations for a public official, expressing remorse for the harm and embarrassment caused.
“I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior was unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official. I am truly sorry,” he stated.
Ikwechegh confirmed cooperation with the Nigerian Police investigation and pledged support for accountability. He also applauded the police for upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights.
Additionally, he announced plans to seek professional counseling and engage in community service initiatives promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
The incident, captured in a viral video, showed Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver, Abuwatseya, after being asked to collect a delivered snail. He threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences.
Ikwechegh’s apology follows widespread condemnation and a police interrogation at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
