Nigerian singer Shallipopi has weighed in on the debate over high fees charged by artistes, urging his fellow musicians to charge according to their value. In an interview with News Central TV, Shallipopi emphasized that an artiste’s worth is tied to the success and reach of their music.
He argued that artistes who achieve similar streaming numbers as American artistes should charge comparable fees. “If your music has gotten the same stream as an American artiste, you should be charging the same way they charge, but if it’s not up to that, you cannot overcharge,” he said.
Shallipopi’s comments come amid concerns that Nigerian artistes have overpriced themselves out of the local market. However, he disputed this notion, stressing that artistes should be paid based on their music’s impact and reach.
