Comedian Layi Wasabi Recounts Childhood Discipline by Uncles

3 Min Read

Nigerian comedian and actor, Isaac Olayiwola, popularly known as Layi Wasabi, has shared a candid story about his upbringing, revealing that his uncles often disciplined him physically.

Speaking on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, the AMVCA winner recounted a memorable incident where one of his uncles traveled for two hours from Ibadan to Oshogbo just to flog him for failing physics and underperforming in mathematics.

“I had uncles that flogged me. One even traveled two hours just to do it,” Layi Wasabi said. “I had passed biology and chemistry but failed physics. My stronger subjects were in the arts, so it was recommended that I switch to the art department. My mum was upset and called one of my uncles. He said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be in Oshogbo tomorrow.’”

Layi Wasabi described how he welcomed his uncle, helped him with his luggage, and then faced the inevitable punishment after his uncle reviewed his report card. “He went through all the courses and said, ‘You failed physics, you didn’t do well in mathematics. Lie down there.’ And I knew what my fate was then.”

In a related revelation, Layi Wasabi recently stated that he does not believe in the concept of having a “girlfriend,” preferring the term “partnership” instead.
