Iran has launched dozens of aerial drones towards Israel, according to both Israeli and Iranian media.
Citing Iranian sources, Iran’s Press TV reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched extensive drone strikes against targets in Israel on Saturday.
Israel’s Channel 12 TV reported that the drones are expected to reach Israel at 02:00 on Sunday (23:00 GMT on Saturday).
The station quoted Israeli military sources as saying that Israeli forces were on high alert and “monitoring all targets”.
“Iran launched UAVs from its territory towards the territory of the state of Israel.
“We are on high alert and readiness,” Israel’s army’s spokesman, Daniel Hagari, said in a televised address late on Saturday.
This latest incident comes amidst heightened regional tensions. Earlier this month, a suspected Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate building in Syria killed seven people, including a senior Iranian general.
Iran had vowed to retaliate for the April 1 consulate attack for which it blamed Israel, which neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
The seizure of an Israeli-affiliated cargo ship by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard earlier today further inflamed the situation.
The purpose and target of the Iranian drones remain unclear.
