Federal Government and Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have reached an agreement on the September 22 resumption of schools nationwide.
The NMA accepted the September 22 date proposed by the Federal Government, stating that schools should resume “in order not to feed into the fear monster in the country”.
The announcement was made public after a stakeholders meeting was held with House of Representatives Committee on Education and members of the association.
Nigerian Ministry of education had initially shut down all schools until October as a precautionary measure for the deadly Ebola virus that has struck the country in recent time.
President of the NMA Dr. Kayode Obembe said that the initial date was reversed after the Federal Government intervened, but however warned that “highest level of vigilance” be maintained.
He went on to add: “All recent travelers to all the provinces of the current endemic countries of the Ebola disease – namely Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo,Uganda, Sudan and Gabon-must be carefully scrutinized for the presence of the virus and epidemiologically treated accordingly.”
